Hi, I am looking in to putting one of the 2" lift kits in to my grizzly and am just wondering if anyone around here has done it or has any reccommendations.  I hear that the kit does make it hard on the axles, but what I am really wondering is how hard?  I mean if I get 1500 miles on the axles rather than 3000 stock, I believe the kit would be worth it in the long run, but if it is going to make them wear out every 500 miles, I might think it is not worth it.  Someone please let me know if I am crazy and should scrap the idea, but I think with a 2 inch lift and 27 inch tires I really could make it through a lot more.  I am also looking in to putting one of the hi rev cdi boxes in this year.  Does anyone have any experience with those?   I am just looking in to what I plan on doing for mods this year, last year I just rode it stock, and now I think I want to upgrade something, just not sure what.

Keith

Keith,

I have been mudding with my 02 Grizz 660 for the last 4 years, and we do alot of hard, hard, mud riding down here in Texas, and Louisiana. To be honest I would pass on the lift kits. To me they are more trouble than what they are worth, even the small lift kits.

I have found the best mod, and is the cheapest, and fastest mod you can do is buy a pure mud tire, at least 27" or 28" in size. This alone will make a huge difference in the mud. There are only two mud tires to buy either the Maxxis Mudzillas, or Highlifter Outlaws. I prefer the Outlaws, the sidewall lug is just awesome, and offers great pulling ability. The Mudzillas are second best. I run 27" Mudzillas, and I can go almost anywhere the big boys go. The only problem I have is super deep ruts that are 13" or more deep, other than that the machine is unstoppable.

As far as the power chip, I wouldn't waste my time. I have had friends who bought them for their 660s, and the power gain was minumum. The motor is what it is a single cyclinder one lunger.

If I were you run either 27" or 28" Outlaws, leaning towards 27" Outlaws, and purchase a clutch kit as opposed to a power chip. The clutch kit, will help you more in the deep mud than anything else.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for thr tips.  The reason I was looking at the 2" lift was the possibility of going to 30 inch tires, but if 28s are plenty and run alright without a lift I might just save the hassle and go that route. I was loking on another board where people are running the 30s with a 2" lift and gorilla axles, but at that point you are getting in to a big initial investment.  Thanks for the tip on the cdi, I may put that one off then and go for the clutch kit.  I am less worried about speed and more about power in the deep mud, and from what I have found the cdi only really helps on speed and just a couple miles per hour.  Well, it is finally starting to warm up here in northern minnesota and I am just getting the itch to get the machine all set up for riding this season, but I do know one thing for sure, tires are going to be first.

Yeah, I believe you will be happy with 27 or 28 inch tires, with a clutch kit. The clutch kit will help alot espeically in the deep thick mud, and oversized mud tires.

Let me know how it works out.

hi i agree with lamigra on most of it.  i would definetly do the cluthch kit first and skip the lift.  the cdi does help some with power or at least it felt that way to me.  another tire option is the itp 589's i have them and they are awesome in the snow to.  i dont know how they compare to mudzilla,  but i wouldnt trade mine for anything else.  i cant see the mudzillas being any better but hey you are the one forking out the cash for em'.  good luck

After poking around a little I did decide to try the 30 inch mudlites.  I been checking around with a bunch of people that did the 30 or the 29 1/2 tires and they said for mud they would not trade them for anything.  From the people I have talked to they are happy with going with the front highlifter lift and flipping the rear hubs.   Some have changed the axles and some haven't.  Most of the people just changed them as a precaution, not due to a break.  I  am going to try them out with the stock axles and just go by the "you have to pay to play" rule.  If they break, I'll cough up the cash and upgrade to the gorilla. Or maybe after I decide if I really like the 30s and plan on sticking with them, I'll upgrade them before they break.  Well, anyways when I get them on and give them a try out I'll let you all know how I liked them and who knows I may not like them at all and there may be a classified ad posted here.

I got the tires and wheels today, put them on and plowed some snow for the test run.  I am sure these will be really good for the mud, plowing snow the tires hardly ever spun.  Compared to the stock tires these are awesome.  I had to trim a little off the corners of the floor board plastic, but I was expecting that.  I am going to have to put a lift kit on though, with the plow up it was rubbing just a little bit.  I think I am going  to go with the 2" front lift and the overload springs all around.   After that is done I am going to put a clutch kit in and I'll be ready for some mud.  I will get some pictures up after I get the lift installed.  Oh and by the way for anyone who might be interested the tires measure about 29", I am kind of glad they are a little smaller than 30, I am sure a full 30 would have been pretty tight.
