Help a M/C rider pick the right Outlander, I am purching one this week.  Definitely decided on an Outlander Max XT but not sure about the power choice of 800 or 650.    I like power but I don't intend to ride a machine to its ultimate potential like I would when I was 20.  I'm not a racer or X-games rider, just an average trail cruizer (some mudding and mild hill climbing.  I'm concerned that the wife or low time riders would become a hazard to themselves with too much power (such as the accidental wheelie maneuver).  Ridiculous question for some and even me.... Is the 800 too much or would I be dissatisfied with the lower 650 power.  Also, the 800 is generally another $1000.  Is another 6 horse power noticable and worth the cost.  I might occasionally pull a trailer, or farm tool, or other stuck ATVs, or take it hunting, but this is occasional at best.  Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to AWF mudduck. :wavy:

There is a noticable difference in power between the 800 and 500 but not much between the 800 and 650. Just get the 650, save some cash and maybe a little gas too. Heck, even the 500 would tackle whatever you threw at it.

For mild hill climbing and mild mudding I would think the 650 would handle your needs.  In my opinion there is a noticeable difference between the 650 and 800 power wise.  The 650 is very strong but the 800 is a beast!!!   I think it would depend on the tire size you want and if you will be riding two people most of the time.  If you want 28" or larger tires and riding two people, I would think the 800.  If you go 27" or smaller tires with two people then the 650.  Also depends how sporty your riding style.  If you a laid back and easy or if you have a need for speed!!

I forgot to mention my son has an 800 outty, lifted, Lawed 31's, pipe, programmer

I have the 800 my brother has the 650. I would say we are both average riders and I could NEVER lose him on the trails. If you are worried about inexperienced riders getting hurt be cautious who you let ride it, the 500 is plenty powerful enough to hurt you...or worse. The 500, 650 and 800 are all rated to tow 1300lbs. Personally I'd go with the 800 and you will never wonder "what if..", or say "I should'a went with ..."

Oh ya, welcome to the site!

We have a 500 Max XT and it has all kinds of power! Before we bought we took a 650 Max and a 800 Max out for a test drive and we both agreed the 500 had lots of power for what we were looking for, plus the 500 gave a nicer ride in our opinion, and it was $2000.00 less then the 800 Max.

Having said that, it sure was fun taking that 800 Max out for a boot:dan:

I have the 650max and I love it. I mostly ride 2up. combined rider weight of aout 400lbs. and it can handle anything. It also has no problem keeping up to the big boys even when riding 2up.
There is no wheele hazard with this bike. the long wheelbase is just too much to bring the front end up.

this bike will do 55mph with 2 riders aboard. so it is plenty fast enough. I have hit 70 riding 1up.. and I think I still had a little left.. but no need to be going that fast.

I think the only way I would recomend to you to go with the 800 is if you were planning on putting really big/heavy tires on it. like if you were goig up to 27" Bighorns, or some of the larger 29" tires. they will probably rob the 650 of power. there is plenty there so robing a little won't hurt it, but it is something to consider.

The bigger the bore the more the heat problem, it is a factor.:2cent:

All the 800's are HOT, most the 650's are HOT, some of the 500's are HOT, haven't heard anyone say the 400's are HOT, of course this depends on the individual and what they wear and where they ride.

I could have easily gone with a 500 myself as I rarely use all the 650, BTW, it will wheelie. :2cent:

The 650 is more than enough to do whatever you will ever do with it.

If you have any hint that you may want the 800, then I would say go for it. You don't want to get the 650 and then be wishing down the road that you got the 800 instead. The price difference isn't that much between the two.

Just letting you guys know I'm reading all of this and appreciate every bit of your info. I've already started thinking about skid plates since I see a lot of you list the ricochette brand and the lack of plates was one of the few weaknesses I've heard of with the Outlander.

Yep, Ricochete's are a must if you ride anything other than dirt roads.

Other mods in your future will be shocks, and maybe tires/rims.

Then there's a PRP stabilizer, coating of the exhaust, some kind of luggage, the list goes on, as far as your wallet will bear. :)

you can get your 650 MAX to wheelie!?  cool.. I'd like to see that.  I am not a "skilled" rider by any means, but I could not when I tried.  I probably just am not that proficient in that kind of thing.

I have the BRP skid plates. they cost more then the Ricochetts and are less effective.  i hind sight I wish I had gotten the richochetts

mattinthehat, ya, it will wheelie on solid ground like grass or pavement. It takes a little body english too.  I don't think it will bring it all the way up and over. I usually chicken out when the fronts get any higher than 2 feet or so, but by that time it's on the way back down anyway. I just got done tearing up my backyard doin a few this afternoon, had I thought of it, I'd of had the ball & chain take a few pics. Next time. I'll have to show her how to use the camera 1st.

hey I noticed in your signature you have Bighorns on the 650 max. what are your personal opinions on them? did you find the 25" to give you less clearance then the stock ACT 26"? and do you find the bike is significantly less "peppy" with the bighorns?

Bighorn's run tall, 25' are 26 and if I remember right the act's ran small. Power loss with the 25's is negligible, IMO.

So far I love the Bighorns, never a flat and wear like iron. They will pick up rather large rocks and toss them at the riders behind sometimes, usually Popos or Hondas.:)

I have the BH on mine also. I noticed some powerloss but very little. I noticed more by putting on the bumpers and winch

I have a 650 XT , i love my bike...But I ride with a bunch of guys who have 800's...I wish I would have spent the other $1000 and gotten the 800...With that being said, If you don't ride with other Outty's get the 650, you'll be most impressed. Both size bikes will cook your butt in the hot summer months, but they keep you nice and warm in the winter too. My 650 will do anything the 800's will, just a tick slower, but both will still whip the fire out of even an 800 Po-Po without even breathing hard.
Go ride both sizes and get the one that makes you happy, that's all that matters anyway.
