Buddy,

If I lived in WV that would be my home port. Yes, we liked it. We went down there in May 2004 and had a gas!

As a matter of fact since then, I understand some area towns do allow atv's on city streets.......and you can ride out to the trail head....but check first to insure that is correct.

1 word of warning. The classifications of the trails: Easiest, Difficult, and Most Difficult. Hmm, now, think about that....easier than what? or compared to what? All I am saying is that "easy" is a relative term when tossing the word out.  When we went, there were 3 newbies (our wives) on new machines, and we did get a considerable workout on the easy trails. As a matter of fact, 2 of the wives will never go back.

Again, my opinion would be that if someone was an advanced beginner, as a minimum requirement, they would do fine.

Yes, a bunch of us will go back, it is worth it, and there are miles and miles of good trails.

If you get down there...enjoy!

Johnny

Thanks for the info.  To tell you the truth you would be surprised how many of the locals have not tried it.  I my self have never been but I have only been living here for a year now and finally got my Outty in August of this year.

I plan to take a trip there very soon with some of what I call the heavy hitters around here...........which by the way just about all of them ride Brute's.

From what I understand and was told by the few people that have actually went to the trail...........you can ride your wheeler into town in some areas with now problems or issues......it is allowed.

We are going some place in Ohio in the next couple of days and then plan to go the Hatfield/McCoy sometime next month for the big showing of "color" when the season really starts to change.

We ride the Hatfield and it has some great riding. There are 4 trailheads and they are starting on their 5th one right now. It's going to be the ashland trailhead in ashland, wva. and then as soon as that's done starting their 6th one in sophia, wva in raleigh county right outside of beckely, wva. The trails are marked very nice and groomed every so often and go in connecting loops making it easy to follow even if it's your first time. There are trails for every skill of rider but even with the easy trails it is best to have a little experience. Most of the surrounding towns allow you to ride in for food, gas, and shelter. We also ride a section that is not hatfield but sandwhiched in between the pinnicle trailhead and the new ashland trailhead called the wagonwheel. It is not marked nor groomed but is on alot of the same coal and gas companies properties. There is something for everyone whether you like hillclimbs, or big mud alot of mud, creek crossings, tight woods riding or just  crusin around it's all there. There are hundreds of miles of trails.Usually on any given weekend it's not hard to find 800 to 1000 4-wheelers on all the trails. They have poker runs every so often and the last one had close to 700 entries. There's also several campgrounds in the area and some serve food and gas right out in the middle of nowhere. If you have never rode southern west virginia give it a try you won't be sorry! We are also looking for some new and cool places to ride within a 3-4 hour trip from here.Let us know someone is always riding and willing to show anyone interested around.

Thanks I appreciate the offer.  I will let you know something.  However, I will be cancelling my ride in Ohio this weekend because my father is in ICU after a heart attack.  I need to stay close to home for quite a while and take care of things.

Keep him in your prayers guys.........it looks at though he may need it.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

We rode in the same area, but we camped at Pinnacle Creek ATV Campground, and the trail head that was at the edge of the campground led to many miles of trails that had nice hill climbs and water crossings. There was a lot of mud and smooth mining roads that were a blast to ride on. We were told that we were not on the Hatfield-McCoy trails, that we were in fact on the other side of them, but where we were riding, there were no fees to ride.

I was there last week durring trail fest. They actually let you ride on the roads to get where you need to go. I even asked a State Patrolman he said just becareful!  The trails are fairly smooth and are maintained. If you slide off the trail "mountain" there is no getting back on because your dead. The sides are extremely steep. There were nice hill climbs and I was happy with the trail system. It lacks streams and verity that the "Bad Lands" had in Indiana. But it was great.

I just got back from Gilbert WV...Stayed at the Browning Fork Trailhouse...Great place.

We rode on land owned by US Steel on Friday, 300,000+ acres near Pinnacle Creek...wow what a ride...The trails are much smoother that the stuff we ride at Windrock, beautiful views of the Fall colors. Huge hillclimbs, mud and NO DUST!!!

Rode the Browning Fork system on Saturday, rode all he Black trails and most of the Blue ones...Went into Man for lunch. Trails on the H-M system are well marked and groomed. Nice riding for sure.

Our Club is going back next Spring, can't wait. :ban:

Love me some WV riding. Especially off of the Hatfield/ McCoy system, not to say that the system is bad by any means. It's all good. I go as often as I can.:dan:

We are planning a trip to H/M in late Mar. Can anyone tell me if the trails have waterfalls near them that we can get to for some pictures. We will stay in Chapmansvile, WV. Any help with trail numbers would be a big help, thanks, Joe.

Dang Joe, the only H/M I haven't been to is Little Coal River and I haven't seen a waterfall yet. Castlerock is the only system that I know of that actually touches a creek and there isn't any waterfalls.

I'm sure there are waterfalls out there but you would probably have to find someone that knows the off trails.

I can show you some train trestles.

Maybe we could arrange a ride for some of the Aw In the spring. It would give us a chance to meet some of the people we talk with on line. Spring is just around the corner. Iv wanted to ride Hatfield

:thm: Excellent idea. I know Outlandish is trying to put together a group ride but that would be like a 20 hour drive for me. An Eastern coast group ride would be the ticket. Same thing for you West coast guys.

If your going to pinnacle about 1/2 way around 23 there will be a trail on right that goes across a creek this take you to the wagon wheel area. Tons of good riding and not part of hatfield system you can ride over to the indian ridge system this way about 10 miles if I remember correct. Very wet thru this area much fun just ask someone down there they should fill you in. But dont ask anyone that has anything to do with hatfield system they wont tell you crap about anything not hatfield. Hatfield Dusk to Dawn riding Wagon Wheel basically a free for all ride at will

Talk to me we have gone in the spring the past 5 years always before memorial day. You dont want to be there on a holiday too busy. We went this year the 1st week in May EXCELLENT not too hot perfect temp.  Let me know, I know my around there pretty good. Would love to set up a ride. The place is great thats why we keep going back. There is also a lot more than just the Hatfield Mccoy trails. All without loading up once you get there.
