I have a tiny crack in one of my stock ACT sidewalls.  about 4mm long.  and I loose about a pound per hour of air through it.  so I am thinking it is time to upgrade to a new tire set.

I really love the way the Outlander 650 handles now.  I love the current acceleration and handeling, and the smooth ride.  so I am leary about switching to a new brand of tire, as I know heavery tires can effect the way the bike performs.

I am curious of the outlander owners that have run on the ACT's and then upgraded, what tires did you find increased the smoothness of the ride, without sacrificing performace?  I am not really concerned with mudding, or anything. I just want a solid durale trail tire, that is smooth riding and can climb well.  To reduce the chance of future sidewall punctures. so I am thinking of probaly going to a 6 ply radial

I am currently considering Maxis Bighorn 2.0 tires ( the new lighter bighorn) , ITP Mudlite XTR's or upgrading my Carlisle ACT's to the Carlisle ACT XLR 6 plys.(same tread, slightly wider footprint, and deeper lugs)

anyone have any advise on these?  I am concerned the mudlight XTRS will ride "rougher" than the current ACTs.  can anyone comment on that for the outlander?

I'd give the Bighorn 2.0's a try. I'm certainly sold on the 1.0's performance. :2cent:

My .02  is to stick with a radial tire first and formost.  Many bias plys ride rougher.  I wouldn't go any larger than a 27inch either.  Also stick with the stock width for trail riding.  I've tried various other tires and came back to the stock ACTs for ride handling and comfort.  Mine too are wearing thin and I intend to replace them with Goodyear M/T's 4 ply radials.  A lot of the larger Arctic Cats come with them.  I had a set on my 650 H2 and kept the fronts, so I will be buying the rears when the time comes.  They ride smooth and wear like iron.

still will be nice when someone puts a good amount of mileage on a set and reports back here on how they actually ride and if they still wear like iron :)

The Goodyear radials I had on the 650 cat did ride and wear well and I had over 2,300 miles on them when I traded it for the BRP 800 in 06'.  I have the fronts cuz' I bought Kenda Bear Claws for the rear and put the stock rears on the front before I traded.  The Goodyears had about the same or less traction than the stock act's but wear longer and are more puncture resistant in my opinion.  The bear claws rode rough and ran alot smaller than 26". Traction was a little better than the stock Goodyears, similar to act's.  Anyway, I have the front set, money is tight, so Goodyears rears I will buy.  If they hold up to the power of the 800 for a couple thousand miles, I'll be more than satisfied.

I was in the same position last year that you are now, mattinthehat.  I did a lot of comparisons on different web sites with weight, lug depth, price, etc.  I wound up with a set of Mud Bug R's, as they are radials, the front tires are the same weight as the ACT's, and the rears are 1 lb LIGHTER per tire than the ACT's.  Plus, they have a 1" lug.  Read my report on the other post here about Mud Bug R's.  The Mud Bug R's are also 1" wider front and rear than the ACT's.  (26x9 and 26x11)

I did look into the ACT XL/R (which have the deeper lug), but they did weigh a bit more than the regular ACT's.

Good luck with your search.  It is never an easy decision to make.

yea I hear you! I'll check out the mud bugs. are they a smooth riding tire? better than the ACT's? I also am thinking of the ACT XLR's... but as you say,, it is a LOT more weight.

Yep, the Mud Bug R's ride just as nice as the stock ACT's.  You do slightly notice the bigger lug at slower speeds, but it does not take away from the ride.

Look at the new terracross xd's.I have the older one's and love them. Great trail tire and mine are wearing pretty well. I think the new Xd's have a stronger sidewall than the old ones. I have also had no issues with the mud I run across either. Pretty much a great tire. If not interested in those I'd go with the Bigs 2.0 tire then.
