Best .22 bullet by far for home defense or concealed carry is the long-rifle Aguilla SSS sub-sonic 60 grain bullet load. The SSS stands for "sniper sub-sonic".  It's a favorite of those that do assasinations for money because with a silencer on a pisol the loudest sound is the auto's slide racking back..

The 60 grain bullet is half the overall cartridge length and it often tumbles in flight with a 1:16 twist barrel. Special 1:9 barrels can be obtained for a 10/22. The SSS had the deepest penetration and largest impact cavity in gelatin in magazine tests.

...the ultimate .22 self defense load for pistol or rifle.

yeah if yer being attacked by a squirrel lolol the 22 is already a fast round but it doesnt have enough shock value once it hits a person. 9mm is even iffy that why most depts I know of perfer the 40cal, 10mm or 45. love the rounds though great fun in a 10/22 :)

The SSS .22 is the exception to the above rules. I hit a rabbit at 50 yards with a 10/22 and heard a loud thud or kerplunk as the bullet hit the rabbit midship. It just about blew him apart with the far side of his carcass just hanging by a thread of skin.

On a person none of the explosiveness is lost. All the energy is used inside the chest wall. I'd imagine a person's head would explode like a pumpkin. :yikes

Speaking of larger bores. In my Kimber .45 I have "Extreme Shock" explosive hollowpoints that were developed for airline guards. They won't even penetrate a seat back or outer skin of an airliner. It'll penetrate a terrorist about 3" and then explode like a hand grenade over-loading the entire nervous system. They just come in blister packs of 6 rds for about $18 if I recall. I've only got a couple of mags filled with them. Haven't fired any yet. Hope I never need to.

Interesting stuff can be found on the internet and various forums and the ads in gun magazines.

The 9mm are not even iffy, they are just down right terrible rounds for anything other than target shooting. Them darn German's came up with the 9mm Luger round for the only purpose of wounding one soldier to take 3 more out of the battle to tend to the wounded one. The 10mm was what the FBI was starting to go towards, but they are now leaning back to the 40. The 10mm is a great round, but it is so fast that it does nothing but poke 10mm sized holes in people. 40 and the 45 are to of the best out there. I have never shot one, but I have read good thing about the 45 GAP round.

Good thread guys. I agree with all of what you said. A .22 short, long or long rifle rimfire is definitely NOT a defensive round. That doesn't mean it hasn't killed people in the "mafia", "one behind the ear" sense. I used to do a lot of IPSC shooting and at almost at point blank range, I would shoot a 3' high hinged heavy steel target and it would fall slowly as I shot it. So much so, that i was able to put 3 or 4 rounds into the steel target as it fell on it's hinge backwards (i was using my Glock 17 with a 4 1/4 or 5" barrel....i forget).
My buddy did the same with his Colt 1911 45ACP and with 1 x 200 grain hardball, the target fell so fast, you couldn't even see it happen. Now this is certainly not proof of stopping power on humans, ie: wound channel, mushrooming, etc., but it definitely turned me off to the 9mm as a defense round.

One last thought, is from an old timer gun writer. I'm sure many, if not all of you have heard before. I don't remember the exact phrasing, but something to the effect of: " a 22. rimfire in hand is better than 2 45acps in the trunk".......i guess the point is that any gun is better than none at all.

I would not carry a 22 for self defence but I do carry a glock 17 loaded to full capacity 18 rounds.

If you do some research, I believe you will find that the 9 mm has killed more people then any other pistol caliber.

My motto is: don't  be afraid to pull the trigger more than once.

Most likely because it's a NATO round and everyone uses it in battle.

I agree and told my wife, just keep pulling the trigger until it goes click, click, click, then if they are still movin, run!

the only reason the 9mm has killed more people than any other caliber (assuming that is true) is because there are more of them out there (ie more departments and private citizens use them).  It has nothing to do with the performance of the round.

Highest one-shot kills goes to the 357 magnum, as far as police use goes.

Many years ago...about 1965, I was working as Shore Patrol in Hollywood, Ca. when we got a call to go to the local police dept. to transport a sailor back to Long Beach, Ca. Turns out the sailor had just been released from a stay in the hospital where he recovered from being shot NINE times with a .22 revolver. No charges were pressed because it was a "he said, she said" situation; a woman customer in a 24 hr. laundrymat at a very late hour says the sailor (in civilian clothes) rushed in the door and ran towards her while unzipping his trousers so she shot him nine times. The sailor maintained that the only reason he rushed into the laundrymat was because he was looking for a restroom. As for 9mm rounds, todays marketplace has some definite manstoppers available now. Just remember to always shoot at least twice, preferrably three times.
