I live in the desert southwest where we have an abundant supply of sand and a glaring lack of water, hence no mud.  So why would I want to buy a mud tire for my Bombardier Outlander 800 Max?  In short, for traction.  Sand, like mud, is "soft" and acts sort of like a liquid.  This necessitates the use of large, deep lugs.  The idea is that the tire will "swim" through the sand or mud.  Normally people use paddle tires for dune riding because of their EXTREMELY large lugs, or paddles.  Paddle tires are great for the dunes,  but leave a lot to be desired on hard pack surfaces.  Also, paddle tires, so far as I know, do not come in 12-inch wheel sizes for sport-utility ATV's.  In looking at the various tread designs that were available for 4x4 ATV's I decided on the long, wide lug pattern of the Bridgestone Mudhook XXtremes in 26x9x12 and 26x12x12 in the front and rear, respectively.

The tires I was replacing were the stock ITP Badlands Radials in 26x8x12 and 26x10x12, front and rear, respectively.  These tires just didn't have enough digging power to move the 950 lb ATV/Rider through sand very well.  The Mudhooks do a much better job in moving the ATV through soft sand.  It's a night and day difference over the stock tires.  However, the Mudhooks combined weight is nearly 56 lbs heavier than the stock Badlands tires.  The tire height is about 1-inch taller than the Badlands as well.  This combination of additional weight and circumferance noticable reduces the perceived power of the Outlander 800.  Another thing I noticed with the Mudhooks is that they are significantly out of round.  This makes for a shakey and unstable ride on hard pack surfaces that gets worse as speed increases.  Sixty miles per hour felt quite stable when I was running the stock Badlands Radials, but with the Mudhook XXtremes I don't feel safe at speeds much over 40-45 mph.

Overall I think the Bridgestone Mudhook XXtremes are great at low speeds in the sand and presumably in the mud.  The aggressive tread and wide tire widths can definitely shovel the dirt.  If you like high-speed riding and snappy response on hard pack surfaces the Mudhook XXtremes are not for you.  The large lugs don't lend themselves to straight tracking on hard surfaces and the shake induced by out-of-round tires will leave you wishing you'd made a different selection.

I plan to try the ITP Mudlites next.

Shawn

Good honest review. Thanks for sharing that. I rode an 800 Max for a week with those tires and was not too impressed with them. It would shake really bad past about 35 and all the way up beyond that.

ITP just came out with a "Dune Star" paddle tire for 12" rims.

i had those tires on my polaris 700 before i sold it,  excellent traction all around....but i didnt get the shakyness at high speeds, they seemed pretty smooth,  but they may feel different on the 800

Try the new Terracross radials by ITP, you can get them in 12" or 14" wheel sizes. I don't know how the lug pattern on this tire will work in sand though...

I'd stay away from the Mudlites unless you have an abundant supply of plugs, these tires are very prone to punctures...:pu:
