Outlander HPG Shocks and Heavy Duty Springs TEST 1

Test area and mileage:

Just west of Edmonton, Alberta Canada. 75 HARD kms along the Sturgeon River from Calahoo to Devil's Lake and back on a rough river surface with quite a few beaver dams to go up and down on. Also rode a bit of gravel road and some hills and clearings.

The course from my buddy's place in Calahoo to Devil's Lake is approximately 27 kms one way. It is a rough surface with a lot of ruts from previous riders and is filled with a lot of twists and turns and beaver dams ranging from 2 feet to 4 feet in elevation.

The HPG Shocks and Heavy Duty Springs were set to the softest setting and were not changed throughout the day.

Started out in the morning about 9:30 am - 10:00 am, finished riding 2:30 pm. Temp was about -20*C and gradually rose to about -9*C. I mention this because temprature affects any shock's (whether gas or oil filled) ability to rebound, as I'm sure you know.

Machine:

Stock Outlander 800XT, 26" Carlise A.C.T. on BRP aluminium wheels inflated to approx 5 PSI.

Test:

Overall the suspension is 100% stiffer (on full soft) than the stock setup (set at full firm) by no means does it ride rough, it is still a good ride (firmer) just not as cushy as the stock setup which in my opinion is a HUGE plus. I would best describe it to riding the bumps instead of just floating over them.

Our top speed on the river ranged from 48 kph to 65 kph in the straights and hitting some of the turns up to speeds of 30+ kph. I mention this beacuse the body roll with the new suspension is so drastically reduced that you can attain greater speeds in the corners without the weight of the quad shifting so far to the outside that you have to lean so far in to counter balance the machine.

I purposely tried to bottom out the front end because that was my biggest gripe with the stock suspension. I could easily bottom it out even set at full stiff. With the new setup no matter what I tried, short of throwing myself over the handlebars or breaking my wrists (I came close on both accounts) I couldn't do it. Riding up the beaver dams at speed and coming down them. Even at lower speeds with my weight on the front of the machine going down the beaver dams I couldn't do it. All this at the SOFTEST SETTING!!!!!!!!

On the straights (river and road) at higher speeds the bike was very stable. Even more so than the stock suspension. Over rougher patches I did feel the stiffness of the suspension more as I got jostled around a bit but it wasn't much worse over stock.

Hill climbs were even improved. On approach the front end would just ride up the hill, where the stock suspension would want to plow the nose down a bit first before riding up.

Braking is much improved as with the firmer suspension the tendency to nose dive under hard braking is drastically reduced.

My opinion:

This is how the Outlander should have come from the factory and it is well worth the money spent on it.
I kept the suspension
on the softest setting as I didn't feel a need to change it and there were no circumstances to require it. Time will tell with different riding conditions (lots of whoops, rocks etc...) today it was perfect the way it was. I'll try and give you more updates as I get more set time with it but for now. I LOVE IT.

NOTES:

The guy I was riding with had the rear shortys up front and was able to bottom his front end in a couple places where I had no problems.

He's about 170 Lbs to 190 Lbs on an 800 with 27" Swamp Lites, HMF pipe and Dobeck.

I'm about 270 Lbs on an otherwise stock 800XT (with the suspension upgrade of course)

I totally agree with Clem. Had mine on for 10 days & 1st ride today , this is not the same quad!! I can't believe the differance. I opened it up to about 40 down a trail with a lot of chuck holes and no bottom out.  just glide over top, these have real rebound.

When I put the new shocks and springs on[fronts only] I adjusted the rears up to #2, now the rears push down about the same as the fronts.

Ground clearance is only 11 inches to the bottom of the frame, if you 1st pick up on the bumper and 10 1/2 after it settles[push down on bumper] But at the outside of the running boards [once upon a time that is where BRP said the  ground clearance was measured at] it is 12 inches.    If you are going to be P.O'd. at not having 12 inches of ground clearance, at the frame, don't buy these. I have the fronts on softest setting.

At the same time I put the new shocks & springs on I installed a precision steering stabilizer. Yes, I have turned into a pussy in my old age.

I have a 400 ho and an 800xt. Before I insalled these new items they both rode about the same as far as bumpy trails go. Now there is a big differance. I am very happy.

I took a friend with me and let him ride the loaner[400]. He said he had ridden his father inlaws quad-he said made by a company that makes snow machines, but wasn't sure what brand. He said the 400 was way better than than that one lots faster and smoother. He raved about what a good ride the 400 was. Then I let him drive the 800. He got off and was shaking his head and said he couldn't believe that it was a whole other level over the 400.

I couldn't be happier with the ride now.:tg::tg::tg::tg:

Keep in mind  these are the 1st quads I have ever owned. These new items made the waahoo factor go way up. best maxdun

Huck, You order them thru your local can-am dealer and I heard they are around the $500.00 mark, depending on your area and dealer.

Good luck

You could try our sponsor, Robs Performance. They are a Can-Am dealer. They should be under $500 for all 4. Tell them your username and are a member of Aurora Wheelers for a discount

Outlander HPG Shocks and Heavy Duty Springs TEST 2

Test area and mileage:

Just east of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta Canada. 50 HARD kms along Beaver Creek and surrounding trails with some wide open areas. River run was windy with tight turns, a rough surface and deep ruts. Trails were also quite windy with sections of whoop-dee-dos of varying  heights and spacing. There were also various log crossings throughout the area.

The HPG Shocks and Heavy Duty Springs were set to the softest setting and were not changed throughout the day.

Started out in the morning about 9:00 am - 9:30am, finished riding 12:30 pm. Temp was about -20*C and was steadily hovering around -18*C.

Machine:

Stock Outlander 800XT, 26" Carlise A.C.T. on BRP aluminium wheels inflated to approx 5 PSI, PRP steering stabilizer

Test:

Overall results are consistent with "TEST 1" with the following additions:

Again I continuously tried to bottom out the front end.

On the whoop-dee-dos I could easily bottom it out even set at full stiff with the stock suspension. With the new setup no matter what I tried, short of throwing myself over the handlebars or breaking my wrists (I came close on both accounts) I couldn't do it. I took the whoop-dee-dos at various speeds from 15 kph to 35 kph. I could not and did not bottom out whatsoever. I would have tried it at higher speeds but I would have ended up "arse over keel".

Riding up and down inclines/declines of various grades and crossing logs with my weight on the front of the machine I couldn't bottom it. Again all this at the softest setting.

My opinion:

The suspension impresses me once again.

NOTES:

2 additonal Outlander 800s on this ride.

Rider 1: about 170 Lbs to 190 Lbs on an 800 with 27" Swamp Lites, rear shortys on the front, PRP steering stabilizer, HMF pipe and Dobeck.

Rider 2: about 230 Lbs on a 800 100% stock Outlander 800.

Rider 1 would bottom out occasionally on whoop-dee-dos keeping up with my speeds. He's making a call Monday morning to his dealer and ordering up the new suspension.

Rider 2 would consistently bottom out on whoop-dee-dos depending on speed and even at some of the lower speeds. On a couple of occasions he was almost pitched over the handle bars.

I ordered the BRP HD front shocks and springs in February, Dealer advised me yesterday that they are on Back order until at least the end of May. Perhaps I should be going with Crutchfields?
