Picked up a new Kolpin 4 gal. fuel pack a couple weeks ago. Like the new handles it has and it should be real easy to pour from. I put 1 gal in just to try it. I have it mounted flat on the front rack on my Sportsman. (Thanks LaMigra!) Fits nice and looks great. Now the bad part. New style has a self venting pour spout same as a Blitz gas can. Leaked like crazy when I parked slightly downhill. Sure glad it wasn't full. I tried to take the cap off and get it to seal. Gave up and dumped the rest of the gas into my truck and on myself.  :pu: Today I called Kolpin and it sounded like I wasn't the first. They are sending me a new cap of a different style. Hopefully it will be just a cap and I can keep the old one with the spout seperate and use it just for pouring. Sometimes newer isn't always better. I was a little skeptical when I saw there was no seal, gasket or o-ring on the cap. I will keep you posted on how the new cap works. If it isn't any better this thing is history.....GOTT

Round 2.........So I called Kolpin and talked to a nice lady in the customer service dept. She sounded well aware of the problem and that the cap was very hard to get positioned just right so it would seal. She said she would send me a new "cap". I was led to believe it was a different style. Well it came today by UPS, no charge. Inside the box were 2 new "caps" with pouring spouts that look just the same as the original one that leaks. I can't see any difference. Counting the several "Blitz" brand gas cans, which use the same cap and spout, I now probably have 5 or 6 caps and pouring spouts all of which probably leak. Such a deal. For the benefit of the doubt I will try the new ones to see if they leak. I don't think this is over ARRRRGH!!!!:hp:.....GOTT

I have had the same problem. I called Kolpin today and they are sending me a c.a.r.b.  style spout with a rubber gasket.  They tried the style you have  first because of cost.  I was really upset because it leaked all over my bike - i did get it to seal with a pipe wrench and a lot of fowl language.

The bad news is that the c.a.r.b style neck has to stay seperate until you need to pour fuel. It will have a regular cap that seals when hauling.

I am opting for a redneck fule pack - my friend has it and it works great and cost 1/3 of the price of a kolpin.

i have had the same problem with my Kolpin 4 gal pack. I emailed them and they stated they had very few problems and gave me directions on how to tighten the cap. It didnt work so they sent me a new one. I havent tried it yet.

here is a copy of the email from kolpin.

"'m sorry to hear of the problem with your fuel pack.  The Blitz cap we use has no gasket, instead it uses a taper seal.  It is important when tightening the cap to NOT allow the filler spout to rotate inside the fuel pack-I have attached an instruction sheet for your information about this.  Also, putting a little Vaseline on the threads of the cap allows a more consistent tightening of the cap without binding for a positive seal.

The fuel caps are designed to seal whether they are inside OR outside the fuel pack.

Take the nozzle and put it into the tank.  Then put the yellow cap on top of it. and slide the black sealing ring over the yellow cap.  MAKE SURE THE NOZZLE is centered in the tank and NOT contacting the sides.  Holding the yellow cap while tightening the threaded ring will insure that the nozzle does not turn and is very important to achieve the proper seal.  The caps are sealed with NO GASKET-they use a tapered edge that matches the tapered edge machined into the fuel tank.  It is important when the nozzle is inside the tank that it is not contacting the inside of the fuel tank or leakage can occur. If you are still having problems after trying this suggestions please let us know and we will go from there.

Any other quesitons please let us know."

yeah i got that email at first, but now they are pushing the c.a.r.b.  spouts.  the tapered  edge dosnt deal worth a hoot. They went to a rubber gasket design.

i tried out the new one yesterday they sent me and it did the same thing. I emailed them back to let them know and also asked for a c.a.r.b. spout solution if they had one as this leaking is not acceptable. I will go buy the carb spout my self if i knew what model and were to get it. I just want the damn thing to do what its suppose to do! I also asked for a rubber gasket solution if a carb solution wasnt available. I wil see what they reply with.

you should be able to get one of the carb style from wally world - the bad part about that is you will have a cap with a rubber gasket for when your hauling the fuel. Then you will have to install the carb neck to pour it.

i could live with that. At least it will be useable. I can keep the spout in storage bag until needed in a zip lock bag.

yeah,  but after spending 90 bucks or what ever I spent on that thing - it kinda pisses me off to have to have a "band aid" type fix for it,and carry the spout seperate.  Just kinda poor for that much money.  I think im going with the redneck fuel pack - might sell this one - not sure yet

Errrrrrrrrrr. What's your bottom dollar? I can live with carrying a spout in my trunk.

Doesn't bother me in the least.:roflao:

Latest call to Kolpin customer service was today. Now they are sending me a different style cap with a gasket. HMMMMM...Seems I heard that before somewhere? At this point I realize I made two mistakes. (1) I bought the damn thing. (2) I went and drilled holes in my front rack so I could bolt on the brackets for a nice clean installation before I found out it leaked. Now I pretty much have to make it work. What I really don't understand is how could such a reputable company change a good product and put it on the market like this without knowing about this problem? I've looked at other websites discussing this also. I wonder what their response would be if this thing had caused a fire? Sounds to me like this should be recalled. Sorry, even if this newest cap works I won't be buying anything else made by this outfit......I'm pissed!:pod:....GOTT

Sell it to trailrider he has a "lack of weight" issue with the front of his bike.  He can fill it with sand to keep his quad from flipping over when going up hills !!:lololol:

They are sending me a C.A.R.B. fuel cap for mine also. Safety laws made them change to this type of system with the new model. I think they new about it and expected to have to ship new caps for it but they cant sell it that way. As long as they correct the problem I will be happy.

Round 4....New cap arrived today. They are prompt. This time I talked to a guy named Jason when I called Customer service. If you are having problems I suggest you ask for him if you call them. He handled the complaint well and did what he said he would do. Gold star on his chart for the day!..LOL The new cap is actually a different style of spout also made by Blitz. The part number is: 33700. While it is a pouring spout and cap combined, it is a different style, has a nice rubber gasket and I cannot see how this will leak. But...I haven't tried it yet. So as they say, final results are TBD. Will keep you posted on the continuing saga.....GOTT  :wavy:

I went to Walmart and purchased a briggs and straton gas can that has the sealed cap on it. I put the funnel and the seal into the stock cap of the Kolpin and now it dont leak! $2.50 for the fix.

5th and final round....Installed the last spout they sent me. It has a rubber gasket. Put in a gallon or two and mounted it on my bike. It works FINALLY! :wh:Not real crazy about the new spout and it doesn't look llike it's going to last too long but at least it doesn't leak. I would still prefer just a cap with a gasket and a seperate pouring spout. Having to pull the spout out of a full tank and getting all gas stinky in order to use it doesn't appeal to me. I'm gonna keep looking for something better.....GOTT

O.K. I give, what is a redneck fuel pack?

I just returned a leaky 3.2 and am getting a 4 gal sent to my non-California address.

Should I expect problems with the new style, should I just Ebay it as new?

I  have 2 of the little ones, they work great!(held upright)
