Wondring if i have a charging system problem I have a 650 V Twin, not many hours on it ( 50), its an 06. I put a new Battery in it this past Winter. This past weekend i went to start it and the Battery was dead. I removed the Battery , tested it ok, charged it up...started fine. so...now i started looking at why it went dead. With the ATV running i connected my Multi meter, i got a 15.5v reading showing me that sure enough the Battery was getting a charge....until... the cooling Fan Came on, then the mulitmeter display dropped to 13.5v likely not enough to sustain a charge on a battery in an infrequently used ATV...and since alot of my riding is on pretty rugged terrain, im typically not moving very fast so the Fan is on alot. Question is...is this normal or do i have an issue with the charging system thanks for the help

in general, that sounds reasonable i think. Also generally, a fully charged battery should still read 12.6 + after a couple days of sitting.

A "smart" battery charger is a good thing for the occaisional rider, I allready killed my original battery by letting it get too low, too many times. Replaced it with an Oddessy battery, it can handle the neglect alot better. rightsaidfred Haven't noticed you being around lately, glad to have you back.

13.5v is still above full static battery charge, (around 12.8v) the fan draws quite a few amps, so that sag is normal IMO, if it fell below 12.8 then i would say that you have a charging problem. Also, if the quad was idling when the fan came on that also explains the drop, the stator really doesn't put out much under 3,000 rpm

Sounds about right.. lots of folks forget that these smaller batteries just don't hold up as well without regular peak charing like larger batts do. Car batts have more cell plate area so that even if there is sulfation etc. there's still some usable area to hold it over for a while. I know folks who have to replace their batts ever spring up here in the great north. All the above info is spot on. Remember, warmer weather is actually harder on a batt than cold weather so it might not hurt to think about getting that smart automatic charger sooner than later.. something for a motorcycle battery wouldn't be much at all.

Thanks Guys, i have a Smart charger "battery Tender" which i use for my off season batteries, un fortunately my shop has no hydro so i cant put the ATV on it when im not there. Thanks for the input, i may just have to ride the ATV up to the house occasioally and put the charger on.

Good to be Back, life has been keeping me insanely busy, barely have time to Breathe it seems....gotta make time for some 4 wheel fun this fall. I have my son (10) riding with me now, got him a Bombi DS90,m that little thing goes pretty much anywhere i go (obviously im not a big Mud Hole guy). Good to hear. Might not be cost efficient, but a solar charger could keep the battery charged up at the shop.
