Managed to lose a rear, outside CV boot yesterday.  Can't see if its broken or just loose.

Dealer time or is this a realatively easy fix?

Any help would be appriciated.

I would go to the dealer. Never changed one but I think you need a special tool to get the clamp on it tight. Depending on why it failed it could be covered by your warranty.Good luck.....GOTT

Found time to take the wheel off and get a better look at things.  It looks like it should be a pretty straight forward job.

My guess is a stick hit just the right spot and tore it open.  I did some trail blazing while scouting yesterday.

Thank goodness I found it early.  It pays to wash and inspect after every ride.

Would be difficult to get warranty to cover it if it's damaged. Make sure the cv joint is clean and has plenty of lube before you replace the boot. Now "Geterdone" and lets go put some miles on that bad boy!....GOTT

I've got the wheel hub off and the inner boot off, but I'm having trouble releasing the axle from the inner joint.  Is there something else I need to do other than spread the ring and pull on the axle?:hp:

Anyone?

Its amazing what you can figure out when you get frustrated.

After taking off the inner boot, I yanked and twisted the axle until it pulled out of the housing.  After that it was easy.  Cleaned it up, spread the "c" clip and knocked the axle out with a hammer and punch, replaced the boot and put it all back together.  Now I'm good to go.  Next time will be a LOT easier.:ban:

Boot Kit $29 - comes with new clamps, but used the old ones
Extra CV Grease $6

Good job! Pat yourself on the back, it is satisfying when you do-it-yourself. :thumb2:

I've been out riding twice now with the new machine, and I love the ride.  However, I've managed to poke another cv boot (inside rear this time).:pu:

There must be some aftermarket protection for cv boots on a 500 Sportsman somewhere.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

There are some upgraded cv joint guards available that are steel or aluminum that will offer better protection than the plastic ones the factory installed. They should be available through some of the sponsors on this site or you may try someone like Dennis Kirk. I know they have some listed in their catalog. Glad you like the new machine.....GOTT  :cents:

My brother just bought a 400 sportsman. Does anyone know if there is detailed instructions and pics or a video on how to change this. I seen the one on the outty and that is what I need. Or is the Outty and the POPO the same.

Tom
